Naknek River

The Naknek River is a short river only 35 miles long and winds its way through the Bristol Bay Watershed. Naknek River gets its start where the overflow water from Naknek Lake empty. It then stretches along until it empties its water into the Kvichak Bay.

Major points along its meandering course include the village of King Salmon and the Katmai National Park and Preserve. For fishermen, this short river offers amazing King Salmon fishing. The river is home to a dozen or more fishing lodges and camps, and that is an excellent indicator of the quality of fishing that happens on the Naknek River.

Fishing the Naknek River

The Naknek is home to one of the largest runs of King Salmon with a run between 15-25K of Kings making their way up the Naknek to spawn. The run starts at the beginning of June and lasts until the season closes at the end of July.

The Sockeye Salmon begin their migration in late June with the peak starting around the first week of July. There are an estimated two million Sockeye Salmon that use the Naknek as the road to their spawning grounds.

Silver Salmon run from the last week of July through September with the peak the second and third week of August.

Rainbow Trout reach 30 inches and weight 10-12 pounds their peak follows the run of the Sockeye Salmon and peak from July through October.

There are Chum Salmon and Pink Salmon available from Late June through August, but during that time the Sockeye are the favorite fish.
