Despite the global pandemic caused by Covid-19, it doesn't necessarily mean an Alaska fishing adventure is off the table for 2020. While Covid-19 continues to hamper travel and worry folks, The State of Alaska has put specific protocols in place so that traveling to and from Alaska can continue safely. What that means for many visitors is that you likely won't notice too much different when you are out on the water but your trip to/from your destination will defintely be a bit different than normal. You'll likely have to wear a mask while traveling, your lodge/guide will be following cleaning/safety protocolts set by the state and you'll be required to take a Covid-19 test prior to or when you arrive in Alaska. You must present a negative Covid-19 lab test at the airport or take a Covid-19 test at the airport and then self-isolate until the results return, and that can take longer than 72 hours. See this article for great information on traveling to Alaska & Covid-19 testing requirements.
If you are not comfortable with these additional regulations or have underlying health issues you would be better off putting off your trip until 2021…however, there are several advantages for those who want to travel to Alaska in 2020 and fish safely. First, it is the unexpected vacancy at many of the fishing lodges…many of which are normally booked solid 1 - 2 years out for prime weeks that now have openings. Second is the discounts that some lodges are offering to fill last-minute vacancies.
While some Alaska fishing lodges, guides & charters have decided to close for the season, many remain open but operating according to the Alaska Health Mandates put in place to keep visitors safe. Below is the list of the Alaska fishing lodges, resorts, guides & charters that remain open and their response/protocols for accepting guests under Covid-19.
