Light the tires and kick the fires! It’s the beginning of another season and the boat yards and harbors are all the bustle, as May and June mark the beginning of the charter fishing season in Ketchikan, Alaska. But for whatever reason it’s often the most overlooked time of year for guests to visit Ketchikan to fish. Year after year guests flock to many destinations in Alaska during the, “peak” months of July and August. All the while the early bird gets the worm theory holds true time and time again, and I’ll tell you why early season halibut fishing and cod fishing puts the other months to shame.

Early season fishing isn’t just “the start of the charter calendar.” It’s a return. The ocean wakes up, and explodes with life. Massive schools of herring, krill and pollock flood into the fishing grounds providing immense feeding opportunities for halibut, cod and rockfish.

Time and again, year after year, we see the same scenarios play out. May and June bottomfishing for halibut, pacific cod and rockfish stand alone. The perfect scenario of baitfish, water temperature and minimal pressure establishes a plethora of riches for those that arrive before the crowds. Really, it makes perfect sense, fish the best spots when the fishing is the best and nobody has fished it yet.. Seems obvious right? But for some reason this time of year is still the most overlooked fishing opportunity in Ketchikan, Alaska.

Hunting Halibut In Ketchikan Spring Water

If you’ve never felt a halibut bite early in the season, let me paint the picture.

The water is cold enough to sting your knuckles when you rinse your hands over the side. You're jigging steadily when suddenly the rod goes heavy. Fast, violent and heavy indicate you’ve hooked the bottom of Alaska herself, but with head shakes to accompany.

I still love watching that moment when a guest’s eyes light up and they whisper, "Uh captain, I think I'm stuck…"

Then the head shakes come into play where the rod resembles a diving board after being sprung from. Whiplashing vertical as the unknown halibut realizes he’s attached to something irregular. Now that battle is on and it’s one that keep our guests coming back year after year.

Early season halibut are powerful and hungry from the winter, spreading across the flats in every size class—from perfect grill-ready eaters to the kind of fish that require teamwork and deep breaths.

Lingcod: The Beauty Of The Ugliest Fish in Southeast Alaska

While halibut are the heavyweights, lingcod are another trophy species on offer. Typically, we provide catch and release for lingcod due to the federal size regulations, but, that doesn’t stop groups from obsessing over wanting to jig up giant lingcod in there rocky habitats. These under the sea brawlers are known for there vicious and addicting strikes, followed secondly by their insane pulling ability. I’ve seen lings hit jigs so hard the unbeknownst anglers almost lost their entire rod overboard. Also watched big males over 60 pounds chase jigs to the surface and smash a lure with their prehistoric jaws.

And when guests haul them up—wide-mouthed, tiger-striped, and looking like they crawled out of a Viking saga—someone on board always says it: “What is that thing?!”

That’s lingcod fishing in Ketchikan: unpredictable, full-throttle, and addictive.

Rockfish & Cod: Steady Action and Big Smiles

Not every moment of the trip has to be a slugfest. Some of the most joyful early season days come from steady, nonstop rockfish action over one of our favorite reefs. The bites come fast, the colors are bright, and the fillets are world-class. Personally, a captains choice of meat for those that can appreciate the succulence of the rockfish filets.

As for Pacific Cod—let’s just say the rest of the country doesn’t know what they’re missing. These fish are eager, plentiful, and hit far more aggressively than their reputation suggests. If you’re stocking a freezer, early season cod is Alaska gold. With no retention limits in place it means open season on double digit cod catches in between your halibut limit.
