Fishing the Kenai Peninsula - Overview for First Time Visitors

What makes the Kenai Peninsula such a great place to visit & fish?

The Kenai Peninsula is a beautiful part of Alaska. You are surrounded by mountains, ocean and beautiful rivers. The Kenai Peninsula offers you ton’s of fishing opportunities in freshwater and saltwater. The coastal towns of Seward and Homer are great places to visit and take in the scenery. The Kenai river and it’s glacial green water is a true sight to see.

What makes the Kenai Peninsula such a great place for fly-fishing?

There are a ton of rivers that are full of salmon, trout and dollies, which are all great species to target with a fly rod. You can also hike into some places and target Grayling, which are a beautiful and fun fish to catch on a fly rod.

What are your favorite 3 or 4 fish species to fish for & why for each?

Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling, Steelhead and King Salmon. I am far more a trout fisherman than a salmon fisherman, but swinging flies for a King is a pure adrenalin rush. Unfortunately our King returns are not good and there are a lot of closures this season. Trout and Grayling are my true passion’s to chase. Targeting these species with dries, nymphs or streamers is pure joy for me. Swinging flies in the fall for Steelhead is a true hunt for a fish that will try to get back to the ocean once hooked.

What would be your five essential flies for someone visiting the Kenai Peninsula? And if needed can break them up by month and do 2-3 favorites per month.

For Trout in the June/July months, Stimulators/Parachute Adams/Prince Nymphs/Flashback Pheasant Tails/Stonefly Nymphs/Leeches/Sculpins. August/September, Egg Patterns/Flesh. October/November, Leeches/Sculpins.

We often recommend people visiting Alaska to stop by Mossy's Fly Shop in Anchorage when they arrive. Can you tell us a bit about your shop and why someone visiting Alaska what help/advice/tips & great you can give people who stop by on the way to their Alaska fly-fishing adventure?

First off, we truly appreciate the support that you give us at Mossy's Fly Shop. We strive to help people visiting Alaska with whatever kinds of questions the have, from gear to use, places to go, where to find specific species and try to have the products that they may need for their Alaska adventure.

What is your favorite time of year to visit & fish the Kenai Peninsula?

I really like June, September and October. June because summer is finally here and it’s just beautiful to finally see open water and green trees. Sept/October, because the trout are getting fat and the fall colors and crisp air is amazing.

What are some of the best towns for someone to base their Kenai Peninsula fishing trip out of & why?

Cooper Landing and Soldotna. Cooper Landing is a small community with a few amenities and in the heart of the Upper Kenai. Soldotna gives you more amenities and centralizes you to fishing the Kenai or driving towards Homer and fishing the coastal rivers along the way.

Everyone knows the Kenai River is one of the best places to fish there what are a few other rivers/creeks that someone looking to fly-fish the Kenai Peninsula should consider?

Ptarmigan Creek, Russian River, Kasilof River and Anchor Rivers.

Any safety tips for first timer visiting alaska? ?

When fishing and hiking around Alaska you always want to be bear aware, especially around Salmon bearing streams. You also always want to be prepared for all kinds of changing weather conditions, from cold to hot. Alaska weather can be very unforgiving and change quickly.

Any favorite places or other activities you'd recommend for someone visiting the Kenai Peninsula?

I think a glacier/wild life tour out of Seward, as well as visiting the Sealife center in Seward is a great thing to experience. For the non-fisher folks on the trip a scenic raft trip in Cooper Landing is a great day as well. Another awesome fishing experience is to book a trip with our good friend Jimmy Akana of Alaska Saltwater Fly Fishing in Seward. I have been out with Jimmy many times fly fishing for Halibut, Rockfish and Salmon. Targeting these species with a fly rod is a whole new experience.

Any other tips or advice for someone planning their first Alaska fly-fishing trip?

Research what you are looking to do well ahead of time, reach out to places with questions and pre book. Alaska has a short window to visit for most tourist and places/things can book up quick.

It looks like Mossy's now offers a hosted fishing trip can you tell us when you started offering that and a bit more about that experience?

We started hosting a couple trips a season to a small family owned lodge on the Copper River in Iliamna Alaska about 7 years ago. We are trying to expand this program to include the Kanektok River and Naknek River as well as branching out in the saltwater destinations during the winter months. Our Copper river trip is in June and September, this a trout fishing trip on a smaller river, that gives a real Alaska remote experience. The Kanektok trip is a salmon and trout trip. The Naknek is a late fall BIG rainbow trip for the spey angler.
