  • We are planning a trip to Wasilla in late July. Would like to hire a guide for local pike or grayling fishing. Is that a viable option locally or is Fairbanks a better place to target these species?

    Thanks - Jon

  • Jon,

Congratulations on your upcoming trip to Alaska! There is amazing Grayling fishing just a little north of Wasilla in the Willow area which is about 30-40 minutes north. Grayling can be found throughout the Alaksa Parks Highway river systems. Hiring a local guide definitely takes the guesswork out of it. In addition to grayling there are also leopard rainbow trout and dolly varden as well as a variety of salmon. Pike are generally not found in our rivers as they are not native to that part of the state. But, there is good pike fishing in some of the lakes around the area. So you should definitely go fish while you are in Wasilla as well as when you go to Fairbanks! After all your coming to Alaska!

    Cheers - Adam

His wife Kathryn Cuthriell and business partner Dave "Reps" Repta make up the rest of the company as well as their dogs Hatch, Rado, and Pike. They fish, live, and guide in Alaska year-round. When not guiding on the rivers they guide ice fishing on Alaska's numerous lakes. Originally from Colorado, he began guiding at the age of 19 while receiving a degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership. Adam is also a current state of Alaska EMT.
  • Hey Jon,

Pike fishing will be marginal in Wasilla & Grayling fishing there will be poor. If it were me, I would hire a guide in Denali (where I work) or Fairbanks. Denali has no pike, but you can find excellent artic graying fishing near Denali. Fairbanks has pike and also has good grayling fishing on the Chena River north of town.

    Hope this helps,

For much of the year, I’m a science teacher, but my summers are spent fly fishing, hiking, rafting and picking blueberries with my wife and two sons in the little town of Cantwell.

Recommend you get a hold of Adam from FishHound Expeditions who is out of Willow not too far from Wasilla and book both. There are pike around Nancy lake area and obviously Grayling in Willow, both areas are neighbors. Fishhound can definitely get you into what they are looking for.

Also if you are going to drive to Denali and/or Fairbanks, they will be able to target Grayling easily along the road system.
