My teenage son and I are planning 3 days of fishing the Kenai River in June. He's a teen so he gets bored easily (doesn't understand the adage that it's called "fishing" not "catching". While hooking a salmon will be thrilling, do you think there will be more constant action fishing for trout since there's no limit with catch and release? Thanks!

Hi Jimmy,
Your timing should put you right in the heat of the first Sockeye Salmon run (in the Cooper Landing section of the Kenai), if you hit that right the salmon action should be fast a furious. Walking the Russian River for trout and/or taking a guided float will provide good trout fishing as well.

Congrats on your upcoming trip to Alaska!
Trout fishing is always fun but just like salmon fishing and any fishing for that manner, there can be times where it is fishing not catching as you pointed out. It also depends on the run timing of the Sockeye, sometimes they can be thick in June, other times few and far between. I would suggest reaching out to some outfitters on the Kenai River as there are guide services that will offer "combo" trips for trout, sockeye, and dolly's. Enjoy your time on the water!
