When people ask me what the most underrated fishery in Southeast Alaska is, I don’t hesitate—Pacific cod, hands down. Yes, halibut and salmon get all the glory, but if you want fast action, steady bites, endless fun, and unbeatable table fare, cod is where the magic happens. And here in Ketchikan, May and June deliver the best cod fishing of the entire season. Due in part to the cooler water temperatures and abundance of bait. This seasonal blend of factors contribute to an all out bonanza on the cod fishing. If you enjoy rapid-fire strikes on light action jigs and bait, then its easy to see how you get hooked on the ferocity of the cod fishery.
Pacific cod fishing in Ketchikan is a perfect blend of accessibility and excitement. These fish aren’t picky, overly technical, or hard to find. They do tend to feed on a particular tide in blitzing style. That’s a dream scenario whether you’re a seasoned angler or someone stepping onto a saltwater boat for the first time. Pacific cod schools show up in strong numbers along the sand flats, humps, and muddy bottoms throughout our local waters, and when the bite turns on, it’s not unusual to see rods doubled over all around the boat. As quick as you can get the cod to the boat, it’s back to the bottom for another hookup.
Targeting Pacific Cod in Ketchikan
Over the years, we’ve fine-tuned simple, reliable strategies for putting clients on big numbers of cod. The key is intimate knowledge of the local waters and bottom structures. Cod love hanging tight to the bottom, especially spots with mixed rock, gravel, and sand where they can ambush herring and krill. Using the sonar to pick out those mid-column clouds of fish that often hover just a few feet above the bottom—when you see that, its time to drop the anchor and let the fun begin.
For tackle, we like to enhance the fun and hookup ratios with light action rods and fast pitch jigs. This combination makes it straightforward and irresistible to the Pacific cod schools below. Cod love movement, so we essentially teach our guests to engage the rod tip to perform fast action or slow roll twitches. Alternately, cod aren’t super shy, so we combine jigging practices with pieces of herring, which provides an oily, smelly, and irresistible scent trail. Drop it to the bottom, crank up a few foot, and hang on. Most bites feel like quick, repetitive taps, and once you start reeling, you’ll feel that steady, thumping fight all the way to the surface.
What makes cod fishing especially fun is how active the schools can be. When the bite ignites, it’s nonstop: drop, hook, reel, repeat. Guests love that rhythm, and I love watching them discover just how exciting Pacific cod can be.
May and June: Peak Fishing, Peak Action
When May hits Ketchikan, something special happens beneath the surface. The water temps start to rise, baitfish move back into the shallows, and the cod fire up. It’s the first major feeding surge of the year, and the action is incredible. Throughout May and June, cod stack up in massive numbers, with dense schools that practically guarantee rods-down fishing.
These early-season fish are strong, healthy, and voracious. I’ve had whole families land cod at the same time, laughing as they race to reel fish up before the next wave hits. For anglers who like quantity, consistency, and the satisfaction of watching their fish box fill, May and June are the months you want to be here. Not to mention, the halibut fishing is also at its peak with larger fish and abundance before the fleets work over the big schools of fish.
The Quality of the Meat: Clean, White, Mild, and Perfect for the Kitchen
If you’ve never eaten fresh Pacific cod, you’re in for a treat. Cod has a firm, flaky texture that holds up beautifully whether you’re frying, baking, grilling, or making fish tacos. It’s clean, mild, and incredibly versatile—easy to cook for anyone, even picky eaters or culinary beginners. Every season I hear the same thing from guests: “I can’t believe cod tastes this good.” Many of our guests and locals actually prefer it over halibut! This can’t be true! It can, because cod has a higher percentage of oil and fat, which causes it to provide a more succulent meat that doesn’t dry out when cooking.
All You Can Eat! No Limit Cod Fishing
Here’s the best part for my freezer-filler guests: there is no retention limit on Pacific cod in this part of Alaska. That’s right, if you’re looking to stock up on premium whitefish for the year, cod fishing in early summer gives you an unbeatable opportunity to fill your freezer with high-quality meat. This is specific only to cod and our guests reap the benefits. With all other Alaska species heavily restricted for size and quantity, this is the one way to beat the system.
During May and June, the fish are in peak condition. Cold waters and abundant feeding make for thick fillets and excellent meat quality. Once it’s processed and vacuum sealed, cod freezes extremely well. Months later, when you pull a package from your freezer back home, it cooks up just as beautifully as the day we caught it.
For travelers who want to bring home a serious haul of top-tier Alaskan seafood without breaking any retention rules, cod is the perfect species to target.
Professional Processing and Shipping
After we return to the dock, we can have your cod and halibut catch professionally cleaned, filleted, vacuum-sealed, and frozen by Ketchikan’s local processors. They’ll box it up in airline-approved insulated containers and ship it straight to your home with zero hassle. It’s the easiest way to transport your Alaska bounty and enjoy the taste of your trip for months to come.
The Perfect Fishery for All Anglers
One of my favorite things about cod fishing is how accessible it is. The tackle is simple, the bites are frequent, and the fish fight hard enough to be exciting without overwhelming beginners. Kids love cod fishing because they’re almost guaranteed success. Experienced anglers enjoy the rapid pace and the chance to fill coolers with high-value meat.
From solo anglers to big family groups, I’ve watched cod fisheries bring out giant smiles and unforgettable moments. It’s one of those classic Alaska experiences—fun, forgiving, productive, and packed with energy.
