One of the first, and most important decisions when planning a fishing trip to Alaska is figuring out where to go. After all, Alaska is huge, and full of many different fishing opportunities. For the traveling angler looking to stay on the road system I feel that Soldotna is a fantastic place to base a trip out of. Soldotna has a convenient central location, diverse fishing opportunities, and its easy to access both freshwater and saltwater fishing. It is the perfect place to set up for an unforgettable experience.

A Central Hub for Fishing and Adventure

Soldotna is in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula, making it an ideal location for anglers who want to experience everything Alaska has to offer. Whether you are flying into Anchorage and making the scenic three-hour drive south, or taking the quick 30-minute commuter flight directly into nearby Kenai, Soldotna is easy to access. In addition to having the Lower Kenai river flowing through the middle of town, you can quickly reach some of the best fishing destinations in the state:

• Homer (1 hr 15 min drive) – Known as the "Halibut Capital of the World" Homer offers incredible fishing for halibut, rockfish, lingcod, and saltwater salmon. There are plenty of charters to choose from in the Marina, however one thing to note is due to the popularity of Halibut fishing the best charters often book up a year in advance, so don't hesitate to book your trip.
• Seward (2 hr drive) – Known for its deep-sea fishing, Seward is a prime spot for silver salmon, halibut, and a variety of other saltwater species. Seward is also home to the Kenai Fjords National Park, which makes for a great option for the non-angler or for the angler just looking to take a relaxing day off.
• Ninilchik (45 min drive) – This small town is a great spot to jump on a charter boat for halibut. The unique tractor launch off the beach is one of the highlights of fishing out of Ninilchik. There is some great halibut water not too far from the beach, making this a popular trip for people not wanting to spend a super long day at sea.
• Cook Inlet Bear Viewing & Razor Clamming – If you’re looking for more than just fishing, Soldotna offers access to fly out fishing and bear viewing trips across Cook Inlet as well as razor clamming along the west side of the Cook Inlet.

Kenai River & Kasilof River Fishing

Soldotna sits right on the banks of the famous Kenai River, and the nearby Kasilof River offers equally exciting fishing opportunities. These rivers provide some of the best roadside fishing in Alaska:

• Sockeye Salmon (June & July) – Massive runs of sockeye salmon flood the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers each summer, making it the perfect time to fill your freezer with fresh, wild-caught salmon. During the peak of the run in July, over 100,000 sockeye can enter the mouth of the river per day. A liberal 6 fish limit provides lots of opportunity to take fish home when fishing the peak of the run.
• Coho (Silver) Salmon (August & Fall) – Silver salmon start arriving in early August, and by the middle of the month the run is in full swing. One of the great things about coho salmon is the variety of techniques that work to catch these acrobatic salmon. We frequently cast spinners or fish with baited kwikfish or salmon eggs. Silver salmon are also the perfect fish to target with a fly rod, as they will actively hunt down a variety of brightly colored streamers.
• Hatchery King Salmon – While most of the state is closed to fishing for wild king salmon, the Kasilof River has a hatchery run of king salmon that arrive in May and June, offering fishing opportunities before the big numbers of sockeye arrive. A liberal 2-fish limit allows for some of the only freshwater king salmon harvest opportunities in the state.
• World-Class Trout Fishing – The Kenai River is home to some of the biggest rainbow trout in the state, with fish over 20 pounds residing in the river. Fall is prime time for targeting these trophy rainbow trout, with our biggest fish consistently coming during the months of August and September. In addition to rainbows, the river also hosts a healthy population of dolly varden, which are a very close relative to the arctic char.

While Soldotna is known for its incredible fishing, it also has all the modern conveniences you need for a comfortable and enjoyable trip. The town boasts a variety of excellent restaurants, numerous lodging accommodations, as well as sporting goods and two grocery stores. Multiple fish processing facilities take all the dirty work out of getting your fish home. Simply drop your fillets off the day you catch them, and then pick up your vacuum sealed, frozen fish at the end of your trip. You can also arrange for delivery via courier service.
