AK Fish Charters calls Fairbanks it's home, and they fish throughout the Copper River area, which is just three hours from Anchorage, four hours from Fairbanks, and a short 1.5 hours from Valdez. The drive is worth it if you are looking for a personalized fishing adventure in some of the wild, scenic, and fish infested waters.

The Fishing

AK Fish Charters focuses on King Salmon and Sockeye Salmon fishing on the tributaries of the Copper River. King Salmon is one of the main reasons fishers come to Alaska, and here, they are wild and large. The Sockeye is one, if not the, best Salmon to eat. Thankfully, the Red Salmon show up in huge numbers. King Salmon are big 20 plus pounds big while the Sockeye tends to be in the 5-10 pound range. The big difference between the two is how you fish for them. Kings will snap a fly or egg pattern, but Sockeye doesn't snap at all. You have to floss them. Flossing is dragging the hook along the bottom of the river. The Sockeye swim with their mouth open, and in Alaska, if you can hook them in the mouth, they are legal. Polarized sunglasses are a must. In the Klutina River, King Salmon are big - in the 60-pound range, and the Sockeye are plentiful.

The Rivers

Aaron fishes the Gulkana and Klutina Rivers. These are all float trips, and some float trips take you through class 2-4 rapids. Don't worry, though; all you have to do is hold on, and Aaron does all of the work.

Most of the float is in calm water, and you moor the raft and get out and fish when there is a pocket of Salmon headed upstream. It is a quiet and enjoyable day. He offers 8-hour floats and provides all of the gear.

Overall expect a fantastic fishing adventure through some of the most beautiful and historic places in Alaska. Expect a professional guide who has a deep love and vast understanding of the rivers, the fish, and how to make this the Alaskan Trip of a lifetime.
