Lake Iliamna and the Fishing - 30 inch Rainbows await

Lake Iliamna is huge. It is ranked 8th in terms of size out of all the lakes in the United States. It is home to trophy sized rainbow trout, Arctic Grayling and a host of salmon that migrate through these waters to their spawning grounds. This prime fishing grounds. The lake and the surrounding tributaries are carefully managed by the Alaska Dept of fish and Game. The result is a fishing habitat that is home to 30 inch rainbow trout. Trout are voracious feeders. Their primary food source is salmon roe. When the salmon are not spawning these crystal clear waters are teaming with aquatic insects. The year round food source allows these beautiful fish to grow to trophy size -- some may weigh as much as 18 pounds.

Fighting the Monsters of Lake Iliamna

While the Rainbow Trout are large and offer an outstanding fight, there are other fish here that are larger and better fighters. The King Salmon in Alaska can weigh up to 120+ pounds. Silver salmon are prized for their eating and their fight. These are aggressive fish that strike with power and precision. The Northern Pike are also massive some as long as 40+ inches. These are crafty predators who lurk. It takes skill to entice one to strike but when they do you are in for an incredible fight. Northern Pike have over 700 teeth in their mouth, which is large enough to tear apart a 5-10 trout.

Fishing Trips, Local Creeks, and Fly-out Fishing

Guests of the Igiugug Lodge is taken on daily guided fishing trips. Transportation may be by boat or float plane. Fishing destinations are either along the Kvichak River or to nearby locations. The guides will discuss with you all of your fishing opportunities and then take you to where the fish are. These waters offer seasonal variation, and the guides make the difference in finding the biggest fish. If you have not tried your hand at fly fishing for Dolly Varden, you should. These are cousins of salmon and offer a beautiful alternative to trophy rainbow trout.
